Fine words and beautiful pictures tell only part of the Hampstead Golf Club story. Its exquisite setting, the renowned course, the iconic clubhouse and the warm welcome of the members all need to be experienced.

Visitors often call the Club “a hidden gem. One reviewer described it as “a series of surprising contradictions”.

Come visit, and see if you agree…

Bernard Darwin is still regarded as one of the greatest British golf writers even many decades after his death in 1961 and he felt at home at Hampstead Golf Club. The grandson of Charles Darwin, Bernard first wrote about the course in 1936 (Click here to read his review) and, in his typically under-stated style of that period, called his experience “a very pleasant afternoon in a most engaging oasis”.

HGC’s three long par 4s were his fondest challenge: “The ordinary mortal is likely to be playing his second shot with a wooden club and at one of them (Ed – I’m guessing the 7th!) I will bet him a daring half-crown the he does not get up in two!”. So said the first non-American golf writer elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame. Click here for the full course tour…

Tradition

Over 130 years of golf on what was once common heathland – that’s the history of HGC. Whether it’s connections to royalty, British prime ministers and showbiz celebrities or the great golfers of the past and present who have visited the course, the traditions of the Club are the foundations of its modern-day appeal and success. Clubhouse

The iconic 1930s clubhouse, built in the Arts and Craftstyle, with its open-beam structure and impressive fireplace is one of HGC’s most admired assets and is the perfect fit for the Club’s active, cosmopolitan and inclusive members.

A warm atmosphere is guaranteed because the main clubhouse area is a single large room, unique among North London golf clubs. Members and guests come together as one, all in sight of the friendly bar which also offers first-rate food, either a varied, constantly changing menu for hungry golfers or outstanding catering for special events.

The stylish Terrace with comfortable seats and an all year all weather cover – just next to the clubhouse entrance – with its colourful, flower-filled border is equally popular with its splendid 19th hole view of the course and its surroundings.

These two stylish areas provide the perfect places for the Club’s social events which range from BBQ Golf late on warm, summer Wednesdays to themed food evenings and a Burns Night. In addition, the clubhouse is a venue for wine tastings with celebrity speakers, live music, painting classes, film nights, quiz evenings, Christmas parties and much more.

“a warm atmosphere is guaranteed.”

Stunning views of North London, many hundreds of majestic trees and wildflowers, as well as freshly fallen snow, and even the chance to spot wildlife such as a family of frolicking foxes or the rare species of small deer called a muntjac – it’s all at Hampstead Golf Club.
