Par 4/5 / 420 Yards
/ SI 1/1 *(3/3)
Another of HGC’s very long par 4s. This one is straight, uphill and typically into the wind. You are doing very well to get on in two – and your second will be all uphill! Avoid the berm across the fairway as it will need to be played like a bunker. A flat green with a slight downhill run from the back.
The ‘Oh, Boy!’ hole

“This has to be one of the hardest par 4s you can play in Middlesex or in many other places – the 420 yards can feel like 520 in winter when it’s a real beast. You need a fair amount of good luck – with the wind, with your tee shot as it lands on the left-to-right sloping fairway, with the berm that is a barrier 280 yards off the tee and then with the quite small, raised green. No room right, no room left, your scorecard can take a big dive and I’ll happily walk off with a five. I call it the ‘Oh, Boy!’ hole. It softens up in summer, but hitting centre left of fairway is essential.”
A strong, straight drive – typically into a head wind – is needed to allow an easier second (or third!) to the elevated green. Avoid getting stuck in the berm at all costs and the uphill shot to the green plays long, so take an extra club.
