Gateway To Golf

HGC-Main-flagpole ICON

Hampstead Golf Club prides itself on being a club both juniors and adults of all abilities and all ages can learn the game from scratch.

The establishment of the Gateway To Golf programme in 2020 is the result of the accumulated experience of high quality golf teachers working at the Club who have provided many thousands of lessons to new players as well as those wishing to improve. The commitment to expanding teaching facilities and learning opportunities for all players has never been greater.

HGC offers two covered teaching bays for practice as well as designated hitting areas around the course. Recently, the Club invested heavily in upgrading its special short game practice area for chipping and putting that now contains an all-weather green and there are more exciting plans still to be announced.

Plus, two very talented and active PGA professionals offer beginner lessons all-year round either for individuals or for small groups as well as helping the improvers lower their handicaps. These lessons are for members or visitors.

HGC’s Pros also stage regular Gateway to Golf Taster Sessions that offer complete beginners a chance to start a love affair with the sport.

The Club promises to keep investing in players of the future.

Now, meet the pros… Marie Martindale and Tony Sheaff

I am a former Ladies European Tour player, WPGA champion and English and British schools champion (I was Marie Allen then!) who is now dedicated to teaching golfers of all ages and abilities at HGC.

My philosophy to instruction is to ensure that the teaching fits the player. So, lessons are a mixture of fun and motivation as well as technical and comprehensive – it’s all about what you need!

As a fully-qualified PGA professional, I teach on the course studying clients play individual holes or in a teaching bay working on a particular aspect of the game. Only one thing is constant – my support for you via the latest video teaching and analysis techniques with CoachNow and SkyTrak. By using these modern methods, player and coach are always connected.

And, with these apps, you can study the videos I take of your swing any time, plus there are my notes attached to the photos of you during the lesson. CoachNow means we don’t always need to be on the course together! You can send me a video or photograph of your swing from anywhere in the world and I can send back some coaching advice directly to you!

For me, it’s all about allowing clients to enjoy improving and to look forward to each lesson.

So, if this sounds like the golf coaching that you want, then call, text or email me right away. My prices start at £30 for a single tune-up lesson and I also offer club re-gripping and repairs; gap testing; and club fitting.

I hope to hear from you soon…and enjoy your golf!

Tony Sheaff

I have had a passion for golf since the age of 9. From the age of 13, I began having success as an amateur, including winning five open junior titles in Sussex and Middlesex and achieving 3rd place in the prestigious Daily Telegraph Junior Golf of the Year competition. I played county golf at junior, colt and full playing levels.

I became a fully qualified PGA Professional in 1991 and have had the privilege of being golf professional at HGC for over 20 years. While teaching, I played in tournaments around the world including six events on the European Challenge Tour; won nine Pro-Am titles in the UK; and made it to the final qualifying stage of the Open Championship three times. I am also proud to hold the course record at HGC with a 5 under par 63 as well as at Bush Hill Park where I shot the same score.

My teaching philosophy starts with a quote from the great American player Ben Hogan who said:

The most important shot in golf is the next one.

Over the years, I have gathered a wealth of teaching experience and instructed hundreds of players of all ages and abilities. It means my coaching style allows me to work with every individual player on a bespoke basis, tailoring my teaching to their needs and ability.

Away from golf, I have a wife and a son and volunteer in a community scheme in Enfield that helps keep children safe from crime.

My prices for new clients start at £30 for a 30-minute lesson, so please get in touch soon – I’d love to hear from you.
